In this exclusive Stars and Stripes Pacific interview, we delve into the life and motivations of Cord Thomas Bennett, a 22-year-old Marine Corps member stationed at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan. Originally hailing from Duncannon, Pennsylvania, Cord shares his inspiring journey into bodybuilding and his relentless pursuit of physical and mental excellence.

Staying Motivated in Bodybuilding

Cord’s journey into bodybuilding is fueled by his desire to stay healthy both physically and mentally. “I love the mental clarity that training gives me,” he says. “No matter how my day goes, I know that training at the end of it will benefit me no matter what.” This passion for personal improvement is a recurring theme in Cord’s life, reflecting his commitment to continuous growth.

Rewards and Challenges

One of the most rewarding aspects of Cord’s bodybuilding journey is witnessing the physical transformations in his body and understanding how different foods affect his performance and physique. However, the path has not been without challenges. Juggling a busy work schedule and personal family issues has tested his dedication, but nothing has been able to slow him down.

Nutritional Insights

Cord emphasizes the importance of nutrition in bodybuilding. “Be consistent with tracking your foods. Changing things up is fine, but you must be consistent with tracking so if weight goes up or down, you know what you did wrong/right,” he advises. He credits IFBB PRO bodybuilder Anthony Mantello as his biggest influence, admiring Mantello’s transparency and passion for the sport.

Top Tips for Aspiring Bodybuilders

For those aspiring to become successful professional bodybuilders, Cord offers these top three tips:

1. Find a balance between regular life and bodybuilding.

2. Fall in love with the training and the pain.

3. Stay healthy, rest, and recover.

Diet vs. Exercise

When asked about the balance between diet and exercise, Cord believes nutrition plays a more significant role. “I’d like to say it’s 50/50, but I think it’s more along the lines of 70% nutrition and diet consistency for results and 30% gym for growth,” he explains. His approach to food has evolved over time, now viewing it as essential fuel rather than just a luxury.

Advice for Beginners

Cord’s advice for newcomers to bodybuilding is to be realistic and set obtainable goals. “Avoid comparing yourself to what you see online. Have fun and take all the wins you can get, small or big. Always remember, comparison is the thief of joy,” he advises. His own pre-workout ritual involves jamming in the car for five minutes before entering the gym, and post-workout, he enjoys a ten-minute walk outside to some indie music to reground himself.

Mental Focus and Training Evolution

Maintaining mental focus is crucial for Cord, who advises not to get caught up in day-to-day struggles but to focus on the show date and the bigger picture. “Take the small wins seriously because they all total up to one big win,” he says. His training and nutritional approach has evolved, particularly in how he views food.

First Bodybuilding Competition and Future Goals

Cord prepped for his first bodybuilding competition with a 12 week cut and competed on July 21, 2024, where he placed third. Training at Pine Style/Gunners Gym, he is excited about this new chapter in his fitness journey. Now, he is in a lean gain phase, prepping for another show in the States with the goal of earning a pro card. Looking ahead, Cord plans to start personal training stateside and aims to open a supplement store in his hometown in the coming years.
