OKINAWA

(Stripes Okinawa)

Even before the Wright Brothers’ successful flight in 1903, an Okinawan had already gone airborne. Tobiasato, legend and pyrotechnician, invented an aircraft sometime around 1780. The aircraft was a glider and Tobiasato flew off a hill in Haebaru Town reaching a distance of 150 to 200 meters. A replica of the aircraft is exhibited in the town’s municipality office.
