OKINAWA

(2024 Okinawa Marathon-Kadena Air Base Traffic Delay)

If you have plans to drive around the island this weekend, take note. There will be traffic restrictions in place for the 29th Okinawa Marathon on Sunday, Feb. 18.

The areas affected include Awase Intersection, Chibana Intersection and Rycom Intersection. The time for the restrictions will vary depending on each location.

On Feb. 18, the race will start at 9 a.m. at the Okinawa Comprehensive Park in Okinawa City’s Hiyagon District. The event concludes at the same venue at 3:15 p.m. The race goes from the park onto Kadena Air Base through Gates 2 and 5, onto Kuter Blvd., Vincent Ave. and Schrieber Blvd. Traffic access will be through the intersection of Benson and Vincent Avenues, but Security Forces will be directing traffic with priority to runners. Drivers can expect to wait as long as 30 minutes to cross Vincent Avenue. Gates 2 and 5 will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Marathon officials suggest drivers should refrain from parking on the side of the road in and around the course of the race to root for runners. Those who are looking to bypass the off-base area near the marathon course should use the Okinawa Expressway through Okinawa-South I.C.

For more info, check out Kadena Air Base’s Facebook page and the race’s brochure in English, which is available here.

Plan ahead and drive safely!
