On December 21, 2024, Camp Schwab held its 43rd Annual USO Christmas Children’s Day, bringing together Japanese school children and their families along with U.S. military service members and their families for a festive celebration of holiday spirit and community partnership. USO Camp Schwab always partners with the Camp Schwab leadership to support this wondferful event. With the support of over 30 volunteers, the day featured a variety of activities designed to bring joy to the children and strengthen ties between the Camp Schwab community and the neighboring communities of Henoko, Kushi, and Toyohara.

The tradition began in 1981, initiated by Mrs. Katsuko Epperson, the wife of retired SgtMaj Epperson, to lift the spirits of Marines during the holiday season while sharing Christmas joy with the local community of Honoko. In 2015, Colonel Odom (now MajGen Odom) expanded the event to include children from Kushi and Toyohara, making it a cornerstone of Camp Schwab’s outreach efforts.

This year’s event was a resounding success. USO Camp Schwab provided pizza, cake, and refreshments, while the 4th Marine Regiment and Camp Schwab Operations provided games and events for children to enjoy. Santa and Mrs. Claus made a grand entrance on a fire truck, delighting the children with toys. The event also featured a performance by the Akemio Winds Marching Band, adding to the festive atmosphere.

In total, the event brought together 268 participants, including local nationals and U.S. children, fostering goodwill and holiday cheer. This annual celebration continues to be a vital opportunity for Camp Schwab to maintain and strengthen its strong relationships with the local community, ensuring the spirit of the holidays is shared across cultures.
