(Shoji Kudaka)
While stationed in Okinawa, you’ve probably tried surfing, snorkeling, diving and beachcombing. But, if you’re looking to up the ante, give windsurfing a try.
At Senaga Island just off the coast of Naha Airport, the calm, crystal waters in the spring are a perfect place to learn.
At Blahav151 on the island, visitors can book a lesson and take to the water. The waters around the island are relatively shallow, suitable for beginner windsurfers like me.
According to the instructor, the wind picks up in December, so you have plenty of time to practice your newly acquired skills until then.
Though the shop doesn’t offer lessons in English, foreign tourists do still get a briefing and the instructors can still provide assistance. Reservations are required and lessons are not private, so each instructor can have up to five students. Kids must be 12 years old and above to participate.
